Public health organizations across the nation are using the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals (Core Competencies) to meet their workforce development needs.  The following examples and tools have been developed by public health practitioners and may be helpful to you as your organization integrates the Core Competencies into its workforce development activities:

Core Competencies for Performance Improvement Managers -

"For too long, quality improvement has been under-recognized in public health for its value in achieving change and improving results…”, Dr. Judith A. Monroe, Deputy Director and Director for State, Tribal, Local and Territorial Support at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  During the recent National Public Health Improvement Initiative (NPHII) Grantee Meeting held in Atlanta, Georgia, CDC used the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals to delineate competencies for health department Performance Improvement Managers.

Through NPHII, resources are being provided by CDC to help health departments increase their performance management capacity and meet national performance standards.  Support for NPHII is provided through the Affordability Care Act.

Employee Workforce Development Survey -

As part of a workforce development initiative, the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District in Texas conducted an employee survey. The survey contained questions adapted from the Council on Linkages public health worker survey and a draft Self Assessment Tool for Tier 1 Public Health Professionals being developed by Janet Place of the North Carolina Public Health Academy and the Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice.  Among other goals, the survey sought to determine why individuals joined the health department and assess employees’ professional development and continuing education needs.  Staff who identified themselves as program managers or higher were requested to assess their level of competence using the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals.
