Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals and Their Importance to Public Health

Overview

This 10 minute video featuring Public Health Foundation President Ron Bialek, MPP, and David Knapp of the Kentucky Department for Public Health focuses on the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals (Core Competencies) and their importance to the public health field. Developed by the Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice, the Core Competencies are a consensus set of skills desirable for the broad practice of public health and are being used by health departments and academic institutions across the country in training and other workforce development efforts.

During this Q&A style video, Mr. Bialek provides a brief overview and history of the Core Competencies and an explanation of why these competencies are important for the public health community. He also discusses how the Core Competencies have been used in developing training and in evaluating performance and assessing skills of the public health workforce, and stresses the importance of competency-based training for building skills for an effective workforce. Watch the video for the full dialogue.

This video is also available on TRAIN as Course 1051828 for those interested in keeping a record of completion in their TRAIN transcripts. Questions may be directed to Kathleen Amos at kamos@phf.org
