What is ‘AI Fatigue’ and How Do We Reduce It?

AI Fatigue

Psychologists and workplace researchers have recognized a phenomenon that millions of AI users are experiencing AI Fatigue, or as it is sometimes called, AI Brain Fry. [2] It is mental fatigue that occurs when interacting with AI exceeds your cognitive capacity, often caused by the constant monitoring, verifying, and correcting of AI outputs. This can lead to mental fog and decision fatigue, making daily work more exhausting and error-prone. [3]

AI Brain Fry is rarely a dramatic collapse. More often, it appears as a gradual thinning of cognitive bandwidth, the mental resources required for deep thought.

AI can draft emails, summarize meetings, analyze information, and automate repetitive tasks; yet instead of making life feel simpler, constant exposure to AI can leave people feeling overstimulated, emotionally disconnected, and exhausted. Even when AI genuinely speeds up work, people often use the saved time to take on more tasks rather than reduce their workload, leading to even greater fatigue.

The problem is not AI itself, but how we use it.

How to Reduce AI Fatigue

Before introducing any AI tool into a process, begin with a few questions:

  1. Which tasks require human attention, and which can be automated without sacrificing quality?
  2. Do we have rules for employees working with AI?
    • Develop a decision tree for AI usage.
    • Take a short reflective pause before important decisions.
    • Do sequential execution instead of multitasking.
    • Take time for discussion and collective reflection with other employees when implementing an AI-assisted decision.
  3. Do we have metrics in place that measure cognitive load?
    • Conduct regular employee health checks and document the results.
    • Monitor employee stress levels.
    • Limit how many AI tools an employee can use.
    • Determine if AI usage has simplified work or made it more complex.
    • Assess how employees feel at the end of the day compared with the beginning of the day.

Less brain fry was seen among employees whose managers were intentional in how AI was introduced and used. [4] The promise of AI may be limitless, but human attention is not. The question is how far the human brain can stretch to keep up. [5]
