​​​​​​​​Join a one-of-a-kind professional development experience at the annual Public Health Improvement Training (PHIT) in 2023. PHIT will have an in-person mini-​conference on May 8, 2023 in Washington, D.C., and a virtual​ conference June​​ 5-7, 2023. Featuring a series of hands-on, skill-building workshops designed to elevate the public health improvement workforce to the next level, PHIT attendees will take action in topics such as:

  • Change Management
  • Communications, Engagement, and Partnership Building
  • Community Health Assessment or Health Improvement Planning
  • Health and Racial Equity
  • Performance Management
  • PHAB Accreditation or Reaccreditation

​​​​​PHIT 2023 features the theme of "Strengthening Performance Through Partnerships and Innovation." At PHIT, attendees have the opportunity to select from a variety of interactive learning and skill-building sessions designed for all experience levels, including peer learning and purposeful networking.

Introduction to Quality Improvement in Public Health

Monday, May 8, 2023, 10:00am-12:00pm EDT

Presenter: Sonja Armbruster​, Performance Improvement Expert, PHF

Description: This session will introduce the basic tenants of quality improvement (QI) framed in a public health accreditation context. Participants will be introduced to the primary QI tools and will practice using these tools. Participants will also begin to understand the process of building a QI culture and QI capacity within their agencies.​​


The Performance Management System: From Foundation to Function

Description: Participants in this interactive session will discover the foundations for performance management. Practitioners who have just updated their performance management system will share their lessons learned and tips for success. Participants will leave with a concrete action plan for making progress on performance management.

Expand Your SWOT Analysis to Include Inclusion and Equity: Make It a SWOTIE​

Description: Today our public health department SWOTs must also consider their impact on the social sector of the community they serve. To do that we need to understand how our current strategies are impacting change outcomes in our community by examining how our health department addresses systematic inequalities and oppression. By adding Inclusion and Equity to our SWOT analysis (SWOTIE) it will help the health department to start to strategically build-in Inclusion and Equity into its daily and systems level work of the health department. Once the SWOTIE is complete, a SWOTIE Action Prioritization Matrix can be used to position each of the SWOTIE actions to determine how much each will impact the community and the resources required to effectively implement the actions.

During this townhall session, we will explore how strong linkages between academic institutions and public health agencies contribute to vital public health capacity, the evidence-base, and delivery of Foundational Public Health Services.​

Workforce Development Design Can be Fun: Aligning Job Descriptions and Workforce Competencies

Description: Successful workforce development ensures that job descriptions reflect the Core Public Health Competencies most important for being effective in that role. During this interactive session, participants will work in small groups to 1) identify specific Core Competencies relevant to public health job descriptions, 2) prioritize Core Competencies that may be most needed in the short term to address agency needs and requirements, and 3) learn more about a new tool to help put this process into practice in their own agencies.​​​​​
