What have we been learning about competencies needed to respond to a public health emergency, like COVID-19?

 

The National Association of Local Boards of Health (NALBOH) and the Public Health Foundation (PHF) held a virtual town hall meeting on the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals (Core Competencies) on January 21, 2021 from 4-5pm EST. The Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice (Council on Linkages) is in the process of reviewing and revising the Core Competencies, and this virtual meeting was an opportunity to provide feedback on how the Core Competencies can better serve the public health workforce. It is essential to consider what is being learned during the COVID-19 pandemic that needs to be considered as the Core Competencies are being updated.

During the meeting, an overview of the Core Competencies was provided, the review and revision process was discussed, and participants had a chance to share their thoughts on the Core Competencies with fellow board members, other public health professionals, and the Council on Linkages. Participants discussed how the Core Competencies can be improved to address changing needs of public health professionals and organizations.
