The National Association of Local Boards of Health (NALBOH) will hold its NALBOH 2014 Annual Conference at the Hilton Milwaukee City Center, in Milwaukee, WI on August 13-15, 2014. This meeting is the year’s largest gathering of local board of health members. This year’s theme for the conference is “Moving Forward with Fresh Ideas in Board Governance,” and the event will be specifically focused on the six functions of Board of Health governance.

The Public Health Foundation (PHF) will be leading two breakout presentations at the annual conference, to update boards of health on the 2014 version of the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals and share a new approach to improving community health – using a population health driver diagram.

On Thursday, August 14, 2014, from 2:45-3:45pm CT, PHF President Ron Bialek and Senior Quality Advisor Jack Moran will conduct a session that answers the question: “How can local boards of health facilitate healthcare and public health partnerships to improve the health of communities?” During this interactive session, a framework developed and tested for successful collaboration between healthcare and public health will be presented and discussed. Participants will have an opportunity to explore driving and restraining forces impacting healthcare and public health collaboration, and strategies to prevent failure once collaboration has been established. Session participants will have the opportunity to use two quality improvement tools – a force field diagram and a population health driver diagram. The framework and tools presented can be utilized on any health issue where collaboration can help improve community health.

On Friday, August 15, 2014, from 9:30-10:30am CT, Bialek will return for a session on the “Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals – Improving to Meet Evolving Public Health Workforce Needs.” As the public health field continues to advance, the skills for delivering public health services evolve. To continue meeting public health workforce needs, the Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice recently revised the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals (Core Competencies). This consensus set of skills desirable for the broad practice of public health is widely used by health departments and academic institutions and is incorporated into the Public Health Accreditation Board’s Standards and Measures and Healthy People 2020. During this interactive session, participants will learn about the Core Competencies and how they are being used in workforce development efforts, changes in the 2014 version of the Core Competencies to address feedback from the public health community, and tools that can facilitate use of the Core Competencies. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions about the revisions and discuss potential impacts on Core Competencies use.

Connect with PHF before, during, or after the event by sending us a tweet on Twitter or posting a message to the PHF Facebook page to start or continue a discussion with other public health professionals and organizations.
