This year, CDC TRAIN, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s gateway into the most comprehensive catalog of public health learning products in the nation, celebrates its second year as a TRAIN affiliate. TRAIN is a web-based, nationwide learning management network for public health professionals. It is comprised of 28 affiliate portals including 25 states and 3 national organizations: the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), and the Medical Reserve Corps (MRC). In addition, many courses on CDC TRAIN offer continuing education (CE) for learners with professional CE requirements.  Since its launch, CDC TRAIN has grown by leaps and bounds, with 70,500 registered learners and nearly 6,000 courses.  And so far this year, the number of new learners on CDC TRAIN has increased by 1,000 per month!

A Free Resource for Public Health Professionals

CDC TRAIN is a great learning resource for public health and healthcare professionals; it is also an effective way for CDC-developed training to reach these learners. By joining CDC TRAIN, you can:

  • Sign up for a free account. Signing up for a TRAIN account is completely free and many of the courses offered through TRAIN are also free of charge.
  • Access thousands of courses and learning opportunities. Gain access to 6,000 CDC TRAIN courses and over 29,000 additional courses in over 60 subject areas.
  • Find courses to satisfy continuing education requirements. Many courses on CDC TRAIN offer continuing education (CE) for learners with professional CE requirements.
  • Join Communities of Practice.  As a CDC TRAIN learner, you can join one of the 11 Communities of Practice available including: migration health, academia & research, and laboratory training.
  • Search for highly rated courses. Find highly rated courses that have been reviewed by fellow learners based on a 1-5 star rating system.

CDC TRAIN is also being touted by CDC leadership. Dr. Tom Frieden, CDC Director, recently tweeted about CDC TRAIN on Twitter: “Learn on the go w/CDC TRAIN’s mobile lessons!  Great resource for #publichealth learning products http://go.usa.gov/jdd4.”  Additionally, CDC TRAIN was the focus of the August 16th edition of CDC’s Office of State, Tribal, Local and Territorial Support (OSTLTS) Did You Know? weekly feature.  Through these promotional efforts, the spotlight will continue to shine on CDC TRAIN and the TRAIN network, bringing growth through new learners, courses, and content.

Hi Naila, Even though TRAIN appears to be geared primarily towards the United States, international learners can register for a TRAIN account and sign up for courses. To register for an account, please follow these instructions: 1. Select your location (international) from the dropdown menu and click “Create Account.” 2. Review and accept the Terms and Conditions. 3. Fill out all the necessary information on the subsequent pages. 4. When you have finished entering all pertinent information, click “Continue” to enter the site. Please let me know if you have further questions about creating a TRAIN.
