Public health organizations across the nation are using the
Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals (Core Competencies) developed by the
Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice to meet their workforce development needs. For the 2011
National Public Health Improvement Initiative(NPHII) Grantee Meeting (funded under the Affordability Care Act), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention used the Core Competencies to delineate
competencies for health department Performance Improvement Managers (PIMs). PIMs are newly established positions in health departments with responsibility for employing quality improvement and performance management methods to improve health department quality, performance, and outcomes.
