FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WASHINGTON, DC, December 2, 2010 - The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) just released our nation's health objectives for the next ten years.  HHS describes the Healthy People 2020 Objectives (HP2020) as being part of  "...an ambitious, yet achievable 10-year agenda for improving the Nation's health." The Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice (COL) Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals (Core Public Health Competencies) are incorporated into three of our nation's HP2020 Public Health Infrastructure (PHI) Objectives. These objectives are noted below:

  • PHI–1: Increase the proportion of Federal, Tribal, State, and local public health agencies that incorporate Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals into job descriptions and performance evaluations.
  • PHI–2: (Developmental) Increase the proportion of Tribal, State, and local public health personnel who receive continuing education consistent with the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals.
  • PHI–3: Increase the proportion of Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) accredited schools of public health, CEPH accredited academic programs, and schools of nursing (with a public health or community health component) that integrate Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals into curricula.

The fact that three of our nation's health objectives for this decade involve the Core Public Health Competencies reinforces the value of this resource to public health professionals as they work to meet our nation’s health promotion and disease prevention objectives.
