New Funding and Training to Support the Public Health Workforce
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has released a landmark Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) to help reinvigorate and rebuild public health infrastructure: Strengthening U.S. Public Health Infrastructure, Workforce, and Data Systems. This nearly $4 billion five-year initiative “will provide cross-cutting support to public health agencies for critical infrastructure needs related to workforce, foundational capabilities, and modernizing public health data systems.” Component A grantees may be health departments; Component B grantees may be national organizations supporting the successful implementation of Component A grantees’ activities. Applications are due August 15, 2022. To learn more about this NOFO, please visit the CDC website.

CDC is also developing a foundational public health training plan for Public Health AmeriCorps. Six of the eight domains of the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals (Core Competencies) are serving as the framework for this training. Once released for Public Health AmeriCorps, CDC will be modifying the training plan for general access through CDC TRAIN, with availability anticipated later this summer.

Facilitating Use of the 2021 Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals
Since the 2021 Core Competencies were adopted in October, work has been underway to support public health professionals and organizations in transitioning to this newest version of the Core Competencies, including sharing the revised version, addressing questions, and updating and developing resources and tools that support use of the Core Competencies. The Core Competencies were shared during sessions at the Public Health Improvement Training in June 2022 and will be the focus of an on demand session at the 2022 National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) 360 Conference in July: Introducing the 2021 Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals: Crosscutting Skills for a High-Performing Workforce. Updated competency assessment tools are available, and the 2021 Core Competencies have been added to the TRAIN Learning Network. Additional resources and tools are currently being developed and will be available online as they are completed. For more information about the Core Competencies, please visit the Core Competencies webpage or contact Kathleen Amos at kamos@phf.org.

Academic Health Department Learning Community Continues to Engage the Workforce
With more than 1,200 members from across the country, the Academic Health Department (AHD) Learning Community continues to provide support for organizations developing, sustaining, and expanding AHD partnerships. AHD partnerships were highlighted during a webinar hosted by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing in April 2022: Partnerships Between Academic Health Departments and Schools of Nursing. This webinar featured AHD partnerships that involve schools of nursing and is available on the AACN website. In May 2022, during the Missoula Academic Health Department Conference, Council staff provided an overview of AHD partnerships, including examples from across the country and tips for growing and sustaining these partnerships. AHD partnerships will also be featured at the 2022 NACCHO360 Conference, during a virtual session with speakers from two local health departments. Envisioning and Building the Public Health Workforce of the Future Through Partnerships will be livestreamed on July 21, 2022 from 2:30-3:30pm EDT. For more details about the AHD Learning Community, please visit the Learning Community webpage or contact Kathleen Amos at kamos@phf.org.

NBPHE Conducting Certified in Public Health Job Task Analysis
The National Board of Public Health Examiners (NBPHE) is conducting a worldwide "We are Public Health" job task analysis survey. This survey is being done to meet two important goals: to conduct a study of the most common functions of the public health workforce on a region-by-region basis across the globe and to update the content outline of the Certified in Public Health (CPH) exam. Anyone working in public health is invited to participate, and the survey will be open until the end of July 2022. To learn more or take the survey, please visit the NBPHE website.
