Help Improve the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals
Provide feedback on the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals (Core Competencies) and help shape the future of the public health workforce. The Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice (Council on Linkages) is currently reviewing and revising the Core Competencies to ensure that these competencies keep pace with changes in the field of public health and continue to reflect the skills needed by public health professionals. As part of this process, the Council on Linkages is seeking feedback from the public health community. Multiple opportunities to provide feedback exist, including through an online feedback form and by participating in the Core Competencies town hall meeting or visiting the Public Health Foundation's booth (#529) during the 141st American Public Health Association Annual Meeting. Feedback is being accepted through December 2013. To learn more about the review and revision process and ways to provide feedback, please visit the Core Competencies review and revision process webpage or contact Kathleen Amos at [email protected].

AHD Learning Community Explores Health Reform Opportunities
The Academic Health Department (AHD) Learning Community held a special meeting in September to begin exploring how AHDs can play a role in health reform. Meeting discussion focused on activities supporting health reform efforts, especially preparation for enrollment through health insurance marketplaces, and what could help facilitate increased public health engagement. Meeting participants were also encouraged to share resources related to the Affordable Care Act. Visit the meeting summary on the PHF Pulse blog to learn more about the discussion, share your own thoughts, and access the list of resources compiled. Additional exploration of opportunities for AHDs to engage in health reform will occur during the AHD Learning Community's in-person meeting at the upcoming American Public Health Association Annual Meeting. For questions, please contact Kathleen Amos at [email protected].

Blog Post Seeks Input on Improving Competence Within the Public Health Workforce
How can we best build, maintain, and measure competence in the public health workforce? That is the question posed in a recent PHF Pulse blog post by Julie Sharp of the Kane County (IL) Health Department, Workforce Development: Improving Core Competence Among Health Department Staff. The Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals can be used in determining training needs, but how can best practices be identified among the training resources available and how can improvement in competence be assured? These and other questions related to ensuring training meets staff needs are important considerations as public health organizations create and implement workforce development plans. Help fellow public health professionals by providing your thoughts on this topic and sharing your own experiences and questions. Comments may be left online or sent to Kathleen Amos at [email protected]. |
