Feedback on the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals Welcome through December 31st

As 2013 draws to a close, provide your feedback on the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals (Core Competencies) and help shape the future of the public health workforce. The Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice (Council on Linkages) is currently reviewing and revising the Core Competencies to ensure these competencies keep pace with changes in the field of public health and continue to reflect the skills needed by public health professionals. Feedback is being accepted from the public health community through December 31, 2013 and will help guide the revision of the Core Competencies in early 2014. A variety of ideas for improving the Core Competencies have been shared through a town hall meeting during last month's American Public Health Association Annual Meeting, online feedback form, and other mechanisms. Visit the PHF Pulse blog post, Feedback from the Public Health Community Guiding a Revision of the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals, or the September 2013 Core Competencies Workgroup Report to learn about suggestions the Council on Linkages has heard so far and the Core Competencies review and revision process webpage for more information on providing feedback. AHD Learning Community Continues Consideration of Health Reform

The Academic Health Department (AHD) Learning Community held its third in-person meeting last month, expanding on the discussion of health reform opportunities for AHDs begun during its September 2013 meeting. Members of the Learning Community and others gathered during the American Public Health Association Annual Meeting to explore how public health practice and academic organizations can get involved in health reform and engage their partners. Small group discussions enabled participants to interact with colleagues and share experiences in this area. Summaries containing discussion highlights for both the November and September meetings are available on the PHF Pulse blog; visit the summaries to learn more, add your own comments, and access resources related to the Affordable Care Act. For more information about the AHD Learning Community or these meetings, please contact Kathleen Amos at [email protected].

January 2014 Webinar to Highlight Use of The Community Guide

Join the Public Health Foundation and United Way Worldwide in the new year for a webinar on using The Guide to Community Preventive Services (The Community Guide) to promote healthy aging. Scheduled for January 16, 2014 from 1:30-2:30 pm EST, this webinar will feature the Gatekeeper Program, an initiative to connect older adults with essential health and safety services. This webinar is the second in a series of free webinars on The Community Guide highlighting how organizations can implement evidence-based interventions to improve community health outcomes. The first webinar in the series focused on diabetes prevention, sharing the work of two health systems in Akron, OH, and is available for archived viewing on TRAIN  as Course 1047702. The Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice, through its work in reinforcing the value of evidence-based programs in public health, helped to build the foundation for The Community Guide.
