Feedback Received Guiding Revision of the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals

Thanks to the public health community and members of the Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice (Council on Linkages) a successful feedback process was recently concluded. This process engaged more than 350 individuals, generating over 1,000 comments on ways to revise and improve use of the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals (Core Competencies). Comments were received from practitioners, educators, and researchers in governmental public health, academia, non-profit organizations, and the private sector, and included suggestions that the Council on Linkages retain the existing eight domains; ensure that changes in public health practice are addressed; and add tools to help integrate the Core Competencies into job descriptions, performance evaluations, and professional development activities. A summary of comments received is available in a recent Public Health Foundation news article. The Council on Linkages has committed to adopting the revised Core Competencies by June 30, 2014. For more information about the revision process, please visit the Core Competencies revision process webpage or contact Cheryl DeAguiar at cdeaguiar@phf.org
