Academic Health Department Mentorship Program Now Open

The Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice is pleased to announce the launch of the Academic Health Department (AHD) Mentorship Program. The newest initiative of the AHD Learning Community, the AHD Mentorship Program aims to foster the development, maintenance, and expansion of AHDs by building ongoing mentoring relationships between individuals involved in AHD efforts. This program will connect individuals seeking guidance in an area of AHD development or operation with those having experience in that area, supporting mutual learning and the sharing of expertise. The AHD Mentorship Program welcomes participation from all who are interested - both individuals seeking mentorship assistance and those who can provide assistance as volunteer mentors. For more information about the AHD Mentorship Program, volunteering as an AHD mentor, or requesting mentorship, please visit the AHD Mentorship Program webpage or contact Kathleen Amos at kamos@phf.org.

Celebrating the Anniversary of the 2014 Core Competencies

One year ago this month, the Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice (Council on Linkages) unanimously adopted a revised version of the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals (Core Competencies). Since that time, numerous activities have helped to disseminate the 2014 Core Competencies, support health professionals and organizations in learning more about this latest version, and build resources and tools to help integrate the Core Competencies into workforce development efforts. The most recent event - a webinar with the Association of Public Health Nurses - attracted more than 140 participants, and the latest resource - a set of Frequently Asked Questions developed from requests for assistance with the Core Competencies - went live just last week. Read more about activities that have been undertaken and resources and tools available to you in the recent PHF Pulse blog post, Making the Core Competencies Work for Public Health, and join the Council on Linkages in celebrating the one year anniversary of the 2014 Core Competencies.

NACCHO Releases 2015 Forces of Change Survey Results

The National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO), a Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice member organization, has released the 2015 Forces of Change survey containing new findings on the forces that affect change in the nation's local health departments (LHDs). Results show that LHD leaders believe that skills embodied in the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals are important for their professional public health staff. Of the skills surveyed, LHD leaders rated ensuring that programs are managed within budget constraints and communicating ideas and information in a way that different audiences can understand most highly, while influencing policy development was rated as less important. Other results from the survey show that LHDs face challenges and opportunities as the public health and clinical care environments evolve. Visit www.nacchoprofilestudy.org/forces-of-change to view an infographic of the findings and learn more.

Activities of the Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice are supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
