Are You Using the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals for Workforce Development?

The Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals (Core Competencies) are being used across the nation within health departments and other organizations to support workforce development and performance improvement activities. Health departments that are pursing accreditation through the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB) are using these competencies in a key element of the process: creation of a workforce development plan to meet requirements within Domain 8 of PHAB's Standards and Measures. The Core Competencies are also being integrated into job descriptions, providing the foundation for discipline-specific competency sets, and furthering the development of competency-based training. Read 50 Accredited Health Departments Are Using the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals for Workforce Development. Are You? to learn more, and visit any of the Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice's Core Competencies resources and tools to get started. Examples of how your organization is using the Core Competencies are welcome by email to Janelle Nichols at jnichols@phf.org.

Help Define Priority Competencies for Population Health Professionals

Have you provided your feedback on key competencies for population health yet? Based on the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals, the Priority Competencies for Population Health Professionals describe desired skills for population health professionals and will be used to develop training and other professional development activities for individuals engaged in activities such as community health needs assessments, community health improvement plans, and implementation of community-based interventions. Preliminary feedback on the draft Priority Competencies for Population Health Professionals being developed by the Public Health Foundation and Association for Community Health Improvement shows that all of the competencies currently included in the set represent valuable skills for population health professionals and suggests a number of additions. View the draft and contribute your thoughts to help ensure this set of competencies reflects the skills needed to accomplish population health goals.

New Enhancements to the Public Health Improvement Resource Center

The Public Health Foundation (PHF) has recently improved the user experience of the Public Health Improvement Resource Center, a searchable database of resources designed to support work in performance improvement, to provide easy access to the most relevant performance improvement resources. This database contains more than 500 resources from health departments, national organizations, nonprofits, government agencies, healthcare organizations, and others, including resources provided by the Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice, such as the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals and Academic Health Department Mentorship Program. Enhancements to the database include a redesigned front page with streamlined search characteristics, and an updated feature highlighting the latest resources. In addition, a comprehensive review was completed, and all resources available through the Public Health Improvement Resource Center were evaluated for content, clarity, and relevance. Submissions of resources to add to this database as it continues to grow are welcome by email to PHF_Resources@phf.org or through Facebook or Twitter. Read Continuous Improvement of the Public Health Improvement Resource Center to learn more, and contact Julie Sharp at jsharp@phf.org with questions or suggestions for the Public Health Improvement Resource Center.

Activities of the Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice are supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
