Inaugural "Ask the AHD Expert" Column: Sharing Resources without Sharing Money

Collaboration between partners in academic health department (AHD) partnerships often involves the sharing of resources, but how can this be accomplished when organizations are operating with limited funding? The inaugural column of the AHD Learning Community's newest feature, the "Ask the AHD Expert" series, explores the question of how resources can be shared in the absence of sharing funding. This column includes guidance from Learning Community Chair Bill Keck, MD, MPH, as well as examples from the University of Illinois at Chicago, University of Kansas, University of Tennessee, and Virginia Tech. Read Ask the AHD Expert: Sharing Resources without Sharing Money to learn more, and contact Kathleen Amos at kamos@phf.org with any questions.

Virtual Town Hall Meeting: Exploring Competencies for the Emerging Field of Legal Epidemiology

Curious about how laws can play a role in the cause, distribution, and prevention of disease and injury? Engaged in projects that are focused at the intersection of law and epidemiology? As discussed during the recent Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice meeting, the Public Health Foundation is hosting a virtual town hall meeting on Thursday, May 11, 2017 from 2-3:30pm EDT to explore the emerging field of legal epidemiology and a draft competency model being developed to support public health practitioners, lawyers, and policy experts working in this area. Developed by the Public Health Law Program at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in collaboration with a multidisciplinary Expert Review Workgroup, the draft Legal Epidemiology Competency Model (LECM) describes research and translation knowledge and skills necessary for effectively developing, implementing, or overseeing legal epidemiology studies. Feedback is needed from the broad public health community, as well as from those engaged directly in legal epidemiology work, to inform the refinement of this draft to ensure that it best meets the needs of the public health workforce. During this virtual town hall meeting, an overview of legal epidemiology and the draft LECM will be provided, and participants will be invited to discuss this emerging field and the knowledge and skills needed to be successful in this work. For more information about this virtual meeting or to register, please visit the meeting webpage or contact Janelle Nichols at jnichols@phf.org.

Workforce Development Resource Spotlight

The collection of resources and tools supporting use of the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals (Core Competencies) is ever-growing, and would not be where it is without the voluntary contributions of public health professionals like you. The newest addition to these resources is a workforce development plan created by the Public Health Accreditation Board-accredited Kent County Department of Health (MI) - thank you for sharing, Kent County! Visit the Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice's collection of Core Competencies-based workforce development plans to see this and other workforce development plans shared by health departments from across the country.

Have you used the Core Competencies to develop a workforce development plan, job description, training, or other resource? Send your resource to competencies@phf.org to have it featured online and in a future issue of the Council on Linkages Update!

Changes to CPH Certification Program to be Discussed during May Webinar

As follow-up to a discussion begun at the recent Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice (Council on Linkages) meeting, the Council on Linkages is collaborating with the National Board of Public Health Examiners (NBPHE) to host a webinar on Friday, May 26, 2017, from 2-3pm ET focused on changes to the Certified in Public Health (CPH) certification program. Following completion of a job task analysis, NBPHE is now working to revise the CPH exam and, specifically, to organize the questions for the new exam into domains. This webinar will provide an opportunity to learn more about the CPH program and the outline of new content for the exam and to discuss the changes occurring and provide feedback to help frame how questions are grouped together into domains for the new exam. Participation is welcome from all members of the public health community, and you do not need to have been at the Council on Linkages meeting to attend. For more information or to register, please visit the webinar webpage or contact Janelle Nichols at jnichols@phf.org.
