Input Welcome on Standard Operating Procedures for Collaborative Groups

Are there best practices for maintaining collaboration among academic health department (AHD) partnerships? How have you approached operating collaborative groups? The second column of the Ask the AHD Expert series explores the question of Standard Operating Procedures for such groups, offering guidance from AHD Learning Community Chair Bill Keck, MD, MPH, and an opportunity for others to share their insight. Read Ask the AHD Expert: Operating Academic Health Collaboratives to learn more and add your own thoughts to the discussion. Explore AHD Partnerships of East Tennessee State University

The academic health department (AHD) partnerships in which East Tennessee State University's College of Public Health is engaged, including those with Sullivan County Regional Health Department and the Northeast Tennessee Regional Health Office, were the focus of the July 2017 AHD Learning Community meeting. During this virtual meeting, Learning Community member Paula Masters, DrPH(c), MPH, HCMC, discussed a variety of aspects of these Northeast Tennessee partnerships, including benefits for schools of public health, health departments, and the community; intricacies of this unique partnership model in which public health students serve as AHD coordinators; activities of the AHD partnerships; and opportunities for improvement. This meeting was archived and can be accessed online for those interested in learning more. Visit Academic Health Department Partnerships of East Tennessee State University to watch the archive or download a copy of the presentation slides, and contact Janelle Nichols at jnichols@phf.org with any questions.

Council on Linkages Representative Recipient of Future of Population Health Award

Earlier this month, the Public Health Foundation announced the 2017 winner of the Future of Population Health Award, which recognizes exemplary practice by hospitals and health systems that are collaborating with governmental public health agencies and other community partners on health improvement strategies and implementation efforts. The University of Vermont (UVM) Medical Center is this year's award recipient for its support of Harbor Place, an innovative community partnership that lowered the cost of care and improved services for the homeless and housing-insecure population in Burlington, VT. Led by the Association for Community Health Improvement's representative to the Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice, Penrose Jackson, Director of Community Health Improvement, and Chief Medical Officer Stephen Leffler, UVM Medical Center collaborated with local organizations to establish Harbor Place, a motel where patients who have recently been discharged from the hospital have a safe place to stay, saving the UVM Medical Center more than $1 million over a two-year period. For more information about this effort, read The University of Vermont Medical Center Saves Over $1 Million through Award-winning Community Partnership and register for the webinar highlighting this story on Monday, October 23, 2017, from 1:30-2:30pm EDT. Please contact Russ Rubin at rrubin@phf.org with any questions.
