Explore Intricacies of New River Academic Health Department
Can having academic health department (AHD) partnerships help improve health department capacity? According to AHD Learning Community member Sophie Wenzel, MPH, Virginia Tech Department of Population Health Sciences, the answer is yes. Ms. Wenzel, who serves as the AHD Coordinator for the New River AHD, a partnership of the New River Health District (VA) and Virginia Tech's Department of Population Health Sciences, shared experiences developing this AHD partnership, as well as successes of the partnership, during the March 2017 Learning Community meeting. During her presentation, Ms. Wenzel discussed her shared position, workforce development activities and Council on Education for Public Health accreditation, funding, student involvement, and joint research projects, among other topics. New Resources to Support Community Health Improvement Efforts
Join the Public Health Foundation and Association for Community Health Improvement (ACHI), a Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice member, on Monday, May 1, 2017 from 3-4pm EDT for a webinar on taking action in support of community health improvement. Featuring two communities participating in the Using The Community Guide for Community Health Improvement pilot initiative, this webinar will offer an overview of the initiative and share the stories of those participating, highlighting successes and lessons learned. Representatives of WellSpan Health (York, PA) and INTEGRIS Health (Oklahoma City, OK) will discuss how coalitions involving numerous stakeholders in their communities have been using the population health driver diagram framework to implement community health improvement activities to address behavioral health needs. In addition, ACHI has recently released a revised version of its Community Health Assessment Toolkit. This web-based tool offers a nine-step pathway to guide and support a robust, community-engaged health assessment process, and new steps have been added to better address the full cycle from assessment through implementation, with strategies provided for each step of the process. SOPHE Seeks New Editor-in-Chief for Health Promotion Practice
The Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE), a member of the Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice, has begun a search for an Editor-in-Chief (EIC) for Health Promotion Practice, an official peer-reviewed SOPHE journal devoted to the practical application of health promotion and education. Launched in 2000, this bimonthly journal is unique in its focus on critical and strategic information for professionals engaged in the practice of developing, implementing, and evaluating health promotion and disease prevention programs. The EIC is responsible for the journal's direction and mission; soliciting articles, overseeing the peer review process, and editing submissions in a timely manner; effectively managing a global Editorial Board; and collaborating with SOPHE and the publisher to increase the journal's visibility, readership, and impact.
