Get Smart About Antibiotics Week
November 17-23, 2014

President Obama recently issued an executive order to combat antibiotic-resistant bacteria in the United States. In an effort to support antibiotic stewardship, the Public Health Foundation (PHF) is promoting Get Smart About Antibiotics Weeksponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

This event is an annual effort to coordinate the work of CDC's Get Smart: Know When Antibiotics Work campaign, state-based appropriate antibiotic use campaigns, non-profit partners, and private sector partners during a one week observance of the importance of appropriate antibiotic use.

PHF is also featuring some resources and training designed to improve antibiotic stewardship.

Cold or Flu. Antibiotics Don't Work For You. Brochure
Antibiotics aren't always the answer for every illness, including a cold or the flu.

Use the Cold or Flu. Antibiotics Don't Work For You. Brochure to help your patients understand the difference between bacteria and viruses and how bacteria become resistant to antibiotics. The brochure also answers some common questions about when it is and is not appropriate to use an antibiotic.
Warning Healthy Adult Poster

Display the Warning Healthy Adult Poster in your office, clinic, or pharmacy to promote adherence to appropriate antibiotic use and prescription. The poster explains that antibiotics are not the best way to treat a cold or the flu.

Get Smart Prescription Pad
The Get Smart Prescription Pad is a convenient checklist for physicians to describe symptomatic relief for a diagnosed viral illness.

By using the pad, providers will diagnose patients with the right information and won't prescribe antibiotics inappropriately.
