John W. (Jack) Moran and Grace Duffy, senior quality consultants at the Public Health Foundation, have recently completed three quality improvement (QI) workshops at the Iowa Department of Health in Des Moines.  The quality improvement tools such as Affinity Diagrams, Flowcharts, and Fishbone Diagrams that they introduced in order to boost efficiencies and strengthen effectiveness in the health department not only helped to streamline processes but also encouraged creativity.  Betty Mallen, Region 2 QI Champion from Hancock County Public Health Services, wrote a catchy song that summarizes her experiences with Jack, Grace, and QI.  The lyrics are sung to the "YMCA" tune.

CQI

Verses

PEOPLE!  There's no need to feel down

PEOPLE!  Pick yourself off the ground

Because PEOPLE, you are in a new town

And you're learning so much new stuff

PEOPLE are listening to us!

We said, PEOPLE!  We don't want you to fuss.

So the next time CQI gets you down

Just stand up and sing this chorus:

Chorus

It's so fun to do C-Q-I!

We all love to do C-Q-I!

We love cause and effect

Making flow charts that work

And force field an-al-y-sis!

It's so fun to do C-Q-I!

We all love to do C-Q-I!

We can get lost in Gantts

Problem solve in a flash

Do all these and 10,000 other tasks.

- Betty Mallen
