PHF Helps You "Get Moving" During National Physical Fitness and Sports Month

May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month. The President's Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition is challenging everyone to pick up a new activity or sport, and help guide loved ones and neighbors to better nutrition and health.

The Public Health Foundation (PHF) offers resources and training courses to help promote physical activity and combat obesity.
PHF Promotes CDC's Winnable Battles

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Winnable Battles are public health priorities with large-scale impact on health and with known, effective strategies to address them.

CDC has identified nutrition, physical activity, and obesity as Winnable Battles. Progress in these areas is being made by developing policy, systems, and environmental initiatives that help make healthy choices available, affordable, and easy. CDC supports several approaches to improve nutrition and physical activity, including improving the food environments in childcare, schools, hospitals, and workplaces; reducing sodium levels in processed and restaurant foods; eliminating artificial trans-fat in the food supply; and increasing opportunities for safe physical activity.*

Find out more about how PHF is promoting Winnable Battles.

The Guide to Community
Preventive Services

The Guide to Community Preventive Services (The Community Guide) is a free resource to help you choose programs and policies to improve health and prevent disease in your community. Evidence-based, scalable interventions in The Community Guide can be broadly implemented to cover many topic areas including nutrition, obesity, and physical activity.

Read the story about how the Sedgwick County Health Department in Kansas successfully used The Community Guide to implement Walktober, a community-wide campaign to increase physical activity.

Explore how Hoonah, a rural community in southeast Alaska, implemented recommendations in The Community Guide to address obesity by expanding access to places for physical activity and engaging the community in outreach activities.

Also obtain free fact sheets on physical activity and other topic areas from the National Association of Local Boards of Health (NALBOH).

Early Care and Education Programs

This guide is an essential tool for anyone trying to prevent or lower the rate of childhood obesity in their community.
30 Easy Ways to Eat Healthier Brochure

Use the 30 Ways to Eat Healthier Brochure to educate your constituents about easy ways for improving their diet. Topics covered in the brochure include eating a healthy breakfast, preparing smaller portion sizes, switching to low-fat or non-fat milk, and avoiding vending machines.

TV Watching and Childhood Obesity DVD

The TV Watching and Childhood Obesity DVD is a one-hour program from the University at Albany School of Public Health's "Public Health Live - T2B2" Series. Dr. Steven Gortmaker explores the effects of TV watching on children's activity levels, and pinpoints TV as the single best predictor of childhood obesity. He discusses interventions and policies that can reduce excessive television viewing by children and thus reduce obesity rates.

Use this program to educate yourself and others about the link between TV viewing and childhood obesity.
