Get Smart: Use Antibiotics Wisely

The Public Health Foundation (PHF) is pleased to be a partner of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Get Smart About Antibiotics Week by offering resourcestraining, and tools to improve appropriate use of antibiotics.

This event will be held from November 18 - 24, 2013, and is an annual effort to coordinate the work of CDC's Get Smart: Know When Antibiotics Work campaign, state-based appropriate antibiotic use campaigns, non-profit partners, and private sector partners during a one week observance of antibiotic resistance and the importance of appropriate antibiotic use.

In observance of Get Smart About Antibiotics Week, PHF is also offering a 10% discount on Get Smart materials from now to November 30, 2013. Please use code GSHOTP when placing an order.
Antibiotics Aren't Always the Answer Brochure
This tri-fold brochure briefly explains six simple and smart facts about antibiotic use and when antibiotics can help treat a child's illness.

Developed by CDC, the Antibiotics Aren't Always the Answer Brochure also answers some common questions about when it is and is not appropriate to use an antibiotic as well as common illnesses antibiotics cannot treat.

Cold or Flu. Antibiotics Don't Work for You. Brochure
Antibiotics aren't the answer for every illness including the cold or flu. This brochure can help patients determine when antibiotic use is appropriate.

Cold or Flu. Antibiotics Don't Work for You Brochure explains the difference between bacteria and viruses and how bacteria become resistant to antibiotics.
Get Smart Prescription Pad
Get Smart Prescription Pad is a convenient checklist for providers to describe symptomatic relief for the diagnosed viral illness.

By using the pad, providers will diagnose patients with the right information and won't prescribe antibiotics inappropriately.
Promoting Optimal Antibiotic Use Through Public Health and Healthcare Systems
After identifying an increase in antibiotic resistant infections in the community, the Independence Health Department (Independence, Missouri) participated in an Antibiotic Stewardship Pilot Program with PHF, using a driver diagram to create logic models and pinpoint opportunities for intervention. See how the department used quality improvement to select interventions to promote optimal antibiotic use through both the public health and healthcare systems.

On Friday, October 11, representatives from the Independence Health Department and the other two pilot sites will visit PHF Headquarters for the 2013 meeting of the Antibiotic Stewardship Advisory Group to discuss continuing the antibiotic stewardship program, and developing further collaborations between public health and healthcare.
