Get Smart About Antibiotics Week, an annual effort to coordinate the work of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Get Smart: Know When Antibiotics Work campaign; state-based appropriate antibiotic use campaigns; health departments; hospitals; non-profit partners; pharmacies; and others, is November 12-18, 2012.

Public Health Foundation (PHF) is proud to be a partner of CDC’s Get Smart: Know When Antibiotics Work campaign and to promote the adherence to appropriate antibiotic use and prescription.  In conjunction with these efforts, PHF is also leading an effort to develop and pilot a change package for public health to reduce antibiotic resistance. This initiative compliments PHF's collaboration with the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) to help hospitals reduce healthcare associated infections due to antibiotic resistance.

PHF is also pleased to announce the availability of two new Get Smart resources now available at PHF’s Online Store. These resources, a brochure and a poster entitled Antibiotics Aren’t the Answer, are designed for adult education and would be useful in doctor’s offices, health centers, and pharmacies. The materials explain the following six simple and smart facts about antibiotic use:

  1. Antibiotics are life-saving drugs
  2. Antibiotics only treat bacterial infections
  3. Some ear infections DO NOT require an antibiotic
  4. Most sore throats DO NOT require an antibiotic
  5. Green colored mucus is NOT a sign that an antibiotic is needed
  6. here are potential risks when taking any prescription drug

In observance of Get Smart About Antibiotics Week, PHF is offering up to 25% most Get Smart materials. Order any of these products as well as An Ounce of Prevention or Hand Hygiene resources today through PHF’s Online Store
