Quality Improvement Resources,
Tools, and Training

Quality improvement (QI) in public health is the use of a deliberate and defined improvement process, which is focused on activities that are responsive to community needs and improving population health.

The Public Health Foundation (PHF) offers resourcesonline training courses, performance improvement (PI) services, and other learning materials to benefit organizations dedicated to improving the quality and performance of public health practice.

Public Health Quality Improvement Encyclopedia
The Public Health Quality Improvement Encyclopedia assists health departments in fulfilling their missions, applying for accreditation, improving the health of their communities, and becoming more efficient and effective.

The Encyclopedia contains 75 QI tools, defines the purpose of each tool, explains what should be done after implementing each tool, and includes examples specific to public health settings. For example, a flowchart can be used to teach employees the necessary steps of a process, identify wasteful steps in a process, or identify areas for process improvement.

The Public Health Quality
Improvement Handbook
There has never been a better time or a more needed one for public health to harness the energy, enthusiasm, hard work, and dedication of the workforce to make a lasting difference. By effectively using QI tools and techniques, we can and will improve our nation's health.

The messages in The Public Health Quality Improvement Handbook are from leaders, physicians, practitioners, academics, consultants, and researchers who are successfully applying the QI tools and techniques they share.
Competencies for Performance Improvement Professionals
The Competencies for Performance Improvement Professionals in Public Health are skills and characteristics desirable for the PI professional.

PHF has collected a set of resources and tools for each competency to support the development of skills and knowledge for PI professionals. Additional information may be found in the Public Health Improvement Resource Center.
Performance Improvement Services
PHF's Performance Improvement Services provide technical assistance, training, facilitation and coaching to assist health departments and their community and healthcare partners with QI, performance management, and workforce development. All of these services are facilitated on-site by PHF's experts. For more information, contact Margie Beaudry or submit an inquiry.
