March 2013 is the 40th Anniversary of National Nutrition Month. Created by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, National Nutrition Month is a nutrition, education, and information campaign that focuses attention on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits.1 This year’s theme, "Eat Right, Your Way, Every Day," encourages personalized healthy eating styles and recognizes that food preferences, lifestyle, cultural and ethnic traditions, and health concerns all impact individual food choices.2 With more than one-third of U.S. adults (35.7%) and approximately 17% (or 12.5 million) of children and adolescents aged 2—19 years are obese, it is imperative that nutritious food become the norm in schools, homes, after-school programs, stores, and communities throughout the country.3

From helping people choose healthier food options at the grocery store to understanding dietary guidelines, proper education about nutrition is one of the core elements in creating effective change.  TRAIN, the nation’s premier learning management system for professionals and volunteers who protect the public’s health, offers local, state, and national trainings that public health professionals can utilize in promoting nutrition. Trainings available on TRAIN that address nutrition include but are not limited to:
In addition, Public Health Foundation’s (PHF) Online Bookstore has resources that can assist state, tribal, local and territorial health departments in educating their populations about proper nutrition.  Publications include:  Think Fresh! Partnerships for Promotion of Vegetables and Fruits in Low-Income Communities Video, Preventing Childhood Obesity in Early Care and Education Programs, Pediatric Series: Helping Overweight Children and Development & Nutrition CD-ROM, and 30 Easy Ways to Eat Healthier. The Task Force on Community Preventive Services offers evidence-based findings and recommendations on promoting good nutrition through The Guide to Community Preventive Services (The Community Guide), a free online resource. The Community Guide helps individuals choose programs and policies to improve health and prevent disease in their community. Systematic reviews are used to answer questions, such as:
  • Which program and policy interventions have been proven effective?
  • Are there effective interventions that are right for my community?
  • What might effective interventions cost; what is the likely return on investment?
