With heavy hearts we have learned that Maurice “Mo” Mullet, MD passed away this past Sunday at The Ohio State University’s Ross Heart Hospital in Columbus, Ohio at the age of 76.

Mo served on the Board of Directors of the Public Health Foundation (PHF) from 1994 – 2001 in several capacities. He was the Secretary/Treasurer in 1995 and became the Chair in 1997, leading the Board of Directors until 2001. After leaving the Board, Mo joined our Director Candidate Selection Committee, continuing to shape the future of the organization.

During his involvement with PHF’s Board of Directors, Mo encouraged our organizational focus to provide more evidence, tools, and training to the field that could improve the practice of public health. This set the foundation for our current focus areas of quality improvement, performance management, and workforce development.

He received the Theodore R. “Ted” Ervin Award in 2004 for Outstanding Service to PHF and in recognition of creative vision, relentless commitment, and leadership.

Mo was a quietly powerful force in public health; in his decision making, he was driven by what was in the best interest of public health. Among our staff, he is remembered for his warm generosity, respected honesty, and many contributions to our organization. Mo will be always remembered and greatly missed.

Dr. Mo Mullet convinced me that the greatest hero in public health was the authentic public health worker; the individual in the game with the primary focus of helping the other players to win. The words above by the PHF team speak pure truth about this authentic public health worker and leader. Tom Doremus Health Educator Inova Health System
