What if water could no longer put out fire? What if, over time, fire evolved to outsmart water? This is the language
Sepsis Alliance has used to spread the message of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) through the
EndSuperbugs campaign.
Antimicrobial resistance is when specific strains of bacteria, viruses, fungi, or parasites adapt in order to avoid the antimicrobials designed to treat them. In a recent survey of C-suite executives from hospitals and health centers in the U.S., 90% see AMR as threatening to society, and 85% are concerned that the problem may be increasing the potential of another pandemic.
Why does Sepsis Alliance care about AMR? Sepsis, which was often called blood poisoning, is a life-threatening emergency that happens when your body’s response to an infection damages vital organs. Sepsis is one of the most significant health complications that can result from AMR. Sepsis affects 1.7 million people in the U.S. and takes the lives of 350,000 U.S. adults each year. As more germs become resistant to treatment, more people will be at risk of developing sepsis. In 2020, Sepsis Alliance launched “
EndSuperbugs: Power the AMRevolution” to help educate the general public and health professionals on AMR, specifically why they should care and what they can do to help mitigate this threat.
Finding that health professionals wanted additional education and resources on AMR, in 2023 Sepsis Alliance launched the Sepsis Alliance AMR Conference, an annual, virtual, two-day conference dedicated to all facets of AMR and sepsis. In 2024, the
Sepsis Alliance AMR Conference will be held on April 10-11, 2024, and be entirely virtual and free, while offering continuing education (CE) credits for nurses. Topics will include:
Opportunities for AMR education for clinicians, caregivers, patients, and the public are viewed by 77% of healthcare executives as necessary for combating AMR. Participation in the Sepsis Alliance AMR Conference offers a unique opportunity for attendees to explore innovative ideas, gain inspiration, and learn about practical technologies to manage sepsis and counteract the expanding challenge of antimicrobial resistance, for free.
Sepsis Alliance AMR Conference is hosted through
Sepsis Alliance Institute. Sepsis Alliance Institute (SAI) was launched by Sepsis Alliance in 2019 as an online learning platform providing health professionals across the continuum of care with high-quality, evidence-based sepsis education and training to improve diagnosis and outcomes for the millions who are harmed by sepsis each year. Offering RN CE credits, SAI has become a free hub for health professionals to learn, connect, and share the resources that have improved their practice. Over 35,000 health professionals have earned nearly 90,000 RN CE credits since 2019.
