Public Health Workforce Numbers Between the Years 2000 and 2006

Overview

This report contains data showing the total estimated number of public health workers or Full Time Employees (FTEs) in the US between 2000 and 2006.  When compiling this report, data from several national organizations (e.g. APTR, ASTHO, CDC, CSTE, HRSA, NACCHO,  NLM and many others) were reviewed. The total number of public health workers in this report is 559, 632, which is quite different from the 448,254 number cited in The Public Health Workforce: Enumeration of 2000. It should be noted that data from the Enumeration may be more accurate than the data contained herein as the Enumeration focused only on public health practitioners and attempted to survey the entire workforce, rather than the samples, which the numbers in this report are based.
