Advancing the public health workforce to achieve organizational excellence
Recruitment and Retention: Perspectives from Health and Public Health

Overview

The "Recruitment and Retention: Perspectives from Health and Public Health" presentation was given to the Council on Linkages by Jean Moore in January 2005. It discusses the background, methods, findings and implications of a Health Resources and Services Administration funded "public health nursing recruitment survey" that was deployed in 2002-2003 by several regional workforce research centers, including the Center for Health Workforce Studies at the University of Albany School of Public Health, NY. Results from the survey showed that retaining public health nurses was easier than recruiting them. Solutions for solving the public health worker shortage are offered in the presentation. They include: strengthening ties between academia and public health practice, working to attract new recruits to public health, etc.
