Advancing the public health workforce to achieve organizational excellence
Taking the Pulse of Your Team

Overview

Just like humans, teams need regular checkups to ensure that they are healthy and performing effectively. Regular checkups will catch deviations from normal performance and enable a corrective course of action. This article presents two diagnostic instruments to help the team facilitator or team coach monitor a team’s health:

  1. A checklist of tasks and processes that most teams should complete
  2. A questionnaire designed to assess a team’s behavioral performance over time; it can be used to establish a baseline and then given at regular intervals to assess how the team is functioning

This tool is a supplement to the Public Health Quality Improvement Encyclopedia. Created by Grace L. Duffy and John W. Moran, it was originally published as a chapter in the Public Health Foundation (PHF) 2011 online book Applications and Tools for Creating and Sustaining Healthy Teams.
