2054.1 - Supporting Retention and Recruitment of the Public Health Workforce: The Role of the Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice

Sunday, October 27, 2024 from 2:30-4pm CDT

Presenters: Mayela Arana, Senior Program Manager, PHF, Kathleen Amos, Director of Workforce Development, Ron Bialek, President, PHF, Amy F. Lee, Chair, Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice

Description: Rebuilding and strengthening the public health workforce following the COVID-19 pandemic continues to be a focus for organizations across the country. The Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice (Council on Linkages) has developed a Retention and Recruitment (R&R) Learning Community aimed at addressing these pressing issues. In this session, participants will learn about the new R&R Learning Community, engage in facilitated discussions to explore factors that influence workforce retention and recruitment, share effective strategies, and contribute to shaping the future direction of the R&R Learning Community. An example from the Minnesota Department of Health will provide real-world context and practical insights. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn from each other’s experiences, discuss successful approaches in their agencies, and access valuable tools and resources to enhance retention and recruitment efforts. Beyond the session, participants will be encouraged to continue their involvement with the R&R Learning Community, fostering ongoing collaboration and support in addressing these vital workforce issues.

3102.0 - Academic Health Department (AHD) Roundtable

Monday, October 28, 2024 from 10:30am-12pm CDT

Description: Academic health departments (AHDs) are formal affiliations between a health department and an academic institution. AHD partnerships provide research, education, service, and strategic opportunities for both organizations. Educational MOUs facilitate student experiences at the health department. Formal data sharing and use agreements facilitate the flow of data between the organizations for analytic and research purposes, and fiscal agreements allow for the sharing of funding for projects and personnel. Successful AHD partnerships allow academia and public health practitioners to be nimbler in their collaborations, often reducing the length of time to advance research, workforce development, and other initiatives of shared interest and priority.

In this roundtable session, individuals with experience developing AHDs will share their perspectives on the benefits of an AHD and best practices on how to start and optimize AHD relationships. We’ll provide space for discussion about strengths and opportunities, as well as potential challenges to navigate, when developing AHD partnerships. These collaborations can be very fluid and distinct depending on the unique circumstances of both the academic institution and the health department.
Topics to be covered by table hosts include
  • Different models for AHDs
  • Formation of AHDs
  • Rurally-focused academic health agency partnerships, including hospitals, FQHCs, health departments, and other health agencies
  • How state and local HDs can work with multiple academic institutions
  • How public health departments are applying the information resources available from the Public Health Digital Library
  • Building an AHD from the ground up
  • Policy briefs as class projects
