Council on Linkages Releases Academic Health Department Research Agenda

The Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice (Council on Linkages) is pleased to announce the release of the Academic Health Department (AHD) Research Agenda. The latest product of the AHD Learning Community, this research agenda explores questions related to effectively measuring the value of AHD partnerships in enhancing public health and determining best practices critical to partnership success, and suggests opportunities for collaborative research on the structure, functions, and impacts of AHDs. Development of the research agenda occurred over the past year and was led by AHD Learning Community member Paul Campbell Erwin, MD, DrPH, University of Tennessee Department of Public Health, with input from a small team of experts, the Council on Linkages, the AHD Learning Community, and other public health professionals from across the country. The AHD Research Agenda can be accessed online at www.phf.org/AHDresearchagenda, and questions may be sent to Kathleen Amos at [email protected].

APHA Annual Meeting Highlights Council on Linkages Initiatives

Initiatives of the Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice (Council on Linkages) were highlighted during several sessions at this fall's American Public Health Association (APHA) Annual Meeting, beginning with an interactive session focused on jump-starting implementation of the Council on Linkages' new Strategic Directions. During Working Together to Improve Performance within Public Health: Translating Workforce Development Priorities into Action, participants tackled questions related to the Academic Health Department Learning Community and the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals, and shared their own experiences with these initiatives. In addition, attendees of the session moderated by Council on Linkages Chair C. William Keck, MD, MPH, The Public Health Workforce: Building the Future, heard from the Public Health Foundation, Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health, de Beaumont Foundation, and National Board of Public Health Examiners during a discussion about the changing public health workforce - one that requires learning and collaboration to be the strongest it can be. Read Learning and Collaboration Key to Building the Strongest Public Health Workforce to learn more, and contact Kathleen Amos at [email protected] with any questions.

Help the Core Competencies Workgroup Enhance Core Competencies Resources and Tools

Have you used the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals (Core Competencies) to develop a competency-based workforce development plan or job description? The Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice is seeking to enhance online collections of workforce development plans and job descriptions that incorporate the Core Competencies and welcomes examples from the public health community. Continued development of these resources is a priority for the Core Competencies Workgroup, which met earlier this month to discuss enhancement of resources and tools to help public health professionals and organizations use the Core Competencies, as well as a new project related to the Core Competencies-based Competencies for Performance Improvement Professionals in Public Health. To have your examples featured on the Council on Linkages website or to get involved in other Core Competencies Workgroup activities, please contact Janelle Nichols at [email protected].
