New Tool Available for Determining Essential Core Competencies for Public Health Jobs

Working to identify competencies for job descriptions or other workforce development activities? A new tool based on the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals (Core Competencies) is now available to help public health organizations identify high-priority competencies for positions within their organizations. The Core Competencies describe foundational skills desirable for professionals engaging in the practice, education, and research of public health, and for any given job, the critical competencies within the Core Competencies will vary depending on the responsibilities and activities of individuals in that position. This tool introduces a simplified form of the Core Competencies and a process for prioritizing competencies for job descriptions, and includes worksheets and other resources for putting that process into practice. Additional information about the tool can also be found in the archive of a recent webinar that described the tool and featured a presentation from Denver Public Health, sharing how they have used this process to identify essential Core Competencies for their organization and built upon this work to strengthen important skills within their workforce. For more information or assistance with this tool, please contact Kathleen Amos at [email protected].

Celebrating the Third Anniversary of the 2014 Core Competencies

Three years ago this month, the Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice (Council on Linkages) unanimously adopted a revised version of the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals (Core Competencies). Since that time, use of the Core Competencies and related tools and resources has continued to increase, supporting current and future public health professionals in areas from education to training to achieving Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB) accreditation. Usage of the Core Competencies has increased among local health departments to 45%, and more than 50% of state health departments and 90% of academic public health-focused programs report use. The Core Competencies are referenced in the PHAB Standards and Measures; incorporated into Healthy People 2020; used by national organizations and networks such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Health Resources and Services Administration, and the Public Health Training Centers; and built into the TRAIN Learning Network. Focus on tool development to assist with use continues, with the latest tool released earlier this month, as does providing guidance to individuals and organizations seeking to strengthen their use of the Core Competencies. For assistance integrating the Core Competencies into your workforce development efforts or to share your success stories, please contact Janelle Nichols at [email protected].

AHD Partnerships to be Featured at NACCHO Annual 2017

The National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO), a Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice member, will hold its NACCHO Annual 2017 event from July 11-13, 2017 in Pittsburgh, PA. During this event, academic health department (AHD) partnerships will be highlighted in a 90-minute sharing session on Thursday, July 13th, from 9:15-10:45am ET in the Smithfield room of the Wyndham Grand Pittsburgh hotel. This session will explore the variety of collaborative relationships that can exist between practice and academic organizations, illustrated by case studies of accredited local health departments with successful AHD partnerships, and introduce a working draft of a staged model of AHD development. Featured local health departments include Knox County Health Department (TN), Jefferson County Department of Health (AL), and Northern Kentucky Health Department (KY). Information about the AHD Learning Community and the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals will also be available throughout the event at the Public Health Foundation's exhibit booth, #30, in the exhibit hall.

Activities of the Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice are supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
