The Public Health Foundation (PHF) would like to thank the more than 1,000 school districts, health departments, non-profit organizations, hospitals, and other community health organizations around the nation that responded to the free Teacher Asthma Reference Card promotion held online in December. This overwhelming response for this product demonstrates the need for simple and easy-to-use public health educational products. Please add a comment below to share other innovative educational products that can make a difference to the public health community. If you are interested in obtaining an image file of the card, please send an email request to PHF's Director of Strategic Communications, Russell Rubin.

The Teacher Asthma Reference Cards were developed as a result of a 2010-2011 PHF Quality Improvement (QI) initiative in Knoxville, Tennessee. PHF’s QI Experts worked with four teams in the Knoxville region to improve the management and control of asthma through use of QI tools and methods. As a result of this training, a team from the Knox County Health Department (KCHD) and the Knox County Schools (KCS) created the slogan “It takes a village to care for a child with Asthma” as well as a Teacher Asthma Reference Card (which was modeled after an emergency response card). The card was distributed to all KCS staff to be worn with their identification badges prior to the 2011-2012 school year. The card contains the bulleted steps for response to an asthma attack based on severity of symptoms. Funding for this project was made possible from a charitable contribution from AstraZeneca.
