Dear Subscriber,

PHF E-News brings you the latest information on how you can use performance management, quality improvement, and workforce development to improve the quality and performance of your organization and the health of your community.

Health Departments Can Continue to Pursue Accreditation, Strengthen Infrastructure, Build Community Partnerships with PHHS Block Grant

Grantees of the National Public Health Improvement Initiative (NPHII) and Community Transformation Grant (CTG) Program are frustrated with the end of federal funding for these productive initiatives. The encouraging news is there are new opportunities ahead to continue these capacity-building and accreditation preparation activities.

A doubling of funds available through the Preventive Health and Health Services (PHHS) Block Grant is providing health departments with new opportunities to start or continue to invest in quality improvement, performance management, and workforce development programs. These capacity-building activities are essential for achieving Block Grant objectives. The PHHS Block Grant can be used to support any Healthy People 2020 goal or objective, including infrastructure objectives related to quality improvement, performance management, and workforce development.

The Public Health Foundation (PHF) is closely monitoring how this expansion of funding can work best for health departments. Stay tuned to future issues of PHF E-News and www.phf.org for updates as more information becomes available about opportunities through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to support capacity-building and accreditation activities. Want to be alerted and kept informed as we learn more? Looking to start a conversation and maximize this opportunity? Behind the Scenes of the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals Revisions

Council on Linkages Logo
The Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals (Core Competencies) are being revised to ensure that it continues to reflect the skills needed for delivering public health services. Find out more specifics about the planned revisions based on the feedback received from the public health community in Kathleen Amos' PHF Pulse Blog post. While the new competencies set is scheduled for release in June, it is not too late for you to influence these changes and decisions.

PHF at 2014 Public Health Improvement Training

The 12th annual Public Health Improvement Training (PHIT) will be held in Atlanta, GA on April 24-25, 2014, to increase the public health workforce's implementation of agency, system, and community health improvement processes. PHF staff will be on hand to share the latest information and conduct trainings in public health quality improvement, performance management, and workforce development at four sessions. See the schedule of informative sessions and more information about this year's PHIT meeting.

Create, Share, and Find Training Plans on TRAIN

PHF invites you to develop web-based training plans -- groups of courses designed to address specific gaps in knowledge, skills, and competence -- and post them to TRAIN. Implementing training plans in your organization can improve individual competence, fulfill training needs, and lead to a more prepared public health workforce. Read about how utilizing training plans on TRAIN can help meet the needs of your organization's workforce in Erin Bougie's latest post to the PHF Pulse Blog.

"Change for the Best" with PHF's New Kaizen Event

Building on the concepts of "Modular kaizen: Dealing with Disruptions," a free online book released in 2011, PHF has developed a new two-day technical assistance offering. This Kaizen Process Improvement Event leads health departments through a facilitated process improvement and incorporates the use of tools, data, and communications. Find out more about kaizen and how it can help you achieve quick improvements.

Upcoming Webinar: The Community Guide for Community Health Centers

PHF is partnering with the National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC) and CDC to co-sponsor a webinar entitled "The Community Guide for Community Health Centers," on Monday, May 12, 2014, from 1-2pm EDT. Register to attend this event, which will highlight successful partnerships and tools for both primary care and public health, and also feature a health center that used The Community Guide to improve its breast and cervical cancer screening rates.
