Promoting Optimal Antibiotic Use Through Public Health and Health Care Systems

After identifying an increase in antibiotic resistant infections in the community, the Independence Health Department (Independence, Missouri) participated in an Antibiotic Stewardship Pilot Program with the Public Health Foundation (PHF), using a driver diagram to create logic models and pinpoint opportunities for intervention. See how the department used quality improvement to select interventions to promote optimal antibiotic use through both the public health and health care systems.
 
New Tools Aid in Core Competencies Use

In response to requests from the field, three tools have been expanded to assist public health agencies and academic institutions use the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals (Core Competencies). Use these tools to aid your organization in integrating the Core Competencies into your workforce development activities and help you prepare for accreditation.

 

Using Quality Improvement in Rhode Island to Prepare for Domain 8 of Accreditation

Following a quality improvement (QI) training last year, the Rhode Island Department of Health applied the learning toward Domain 8 of accreditation to ensure a competent public health workforce. Read how the department used QI to increase enrollment of staff on TRAIN and document training activities related to the department's accreditation preparation.

 

How Do You Improve Core Competence Among Your Health Department Staff?

The Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals, adopted by the Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice, provide an opportunity for health departments to assess their workforce development needs. Once this assessment is complete, Health Data and Quality Coordinator at the Kane County (IL) Health Department Julie Sharp, asks "How do we find the best practices among a large number of training resources?" among other questions for your consideration and input in the latest PHF Pulse blog post.

Indiana Joins the TRAIN Network

TRAIN
The newest member of the TRAIN affiliate community, the State of Indiana, becomes the 25th state affiliate to use TRAIN to improve competencies and performance among its workforce. Read why the Indiana State Department of Health is excited to provide access to this network for all Hoosiers who protect the public's health.
