The Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Emergency Management Institute (EMI) "offers self-paced courses designed for professionals who have emergency management responsibilities and the general public who seek to be informed of emergency response.”¹   These courses support the nine mission areas identified by the National Preparedness Goal: incident management, operational planning, disaster logistics, emergency communications, service to disaster victims, continuity programs, public disaster communications, integrated preparedness, and hazard mitigation.   Having these courses readily available is beneficial in maintaining a prepared public health workforce.

These courses have been made available through TRAIN, the nation’s premier learning management system for professionals and volunteers who protect the public’s health, to the over 650,000 TRAIN learners.  All of the FEMA’s web-based independent study (IS) courses developed by EMI are posted to TRAIN.  Learners completing these courses can earn Continuing Education (CE)/Continuing Education Unit (CEU) credits offered by EMI.   TRAIN maintains a single unified transcript of completed courses for every learner. Since many independent study courses are updated annually with new versions, maintaining a record of completed courses proves to be useful over time. Moreover, TRAIN learners can view completed IS courses alongside public health and preparedness training other organizations post to TRAIN, allowing for a more complete picture of an individual learner’s training record.

Currently, there are over 150 IS courses available on TRAIN.  Since the start of the new year, many FEMA courses have been added to TRAIN.  Below are the most recent courses:
