Advancing the public health workforce to achieve organizational excellence
Public Health Systems Research (PHSR)

Overview

What is Public Health Systems Research?

"Public Health Systems Research is a field of inquiry using quantitative and qualitative methodology to examine the impact of the organization, staffing, financing, and management of public health systems on the access to, delivery, cost, quality, and outcomes of population-based services and interventions."

Promoting PHSR is a past project of the Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice (Council on Linkages).  The Council on Linkages played an instrumental role in:
  • Bringing together PHSR researchers, funders, and users at annual PHSR Leadership Forums
  • Helping establish a PHSR Interest Group at AcademyHealth
  • Disseminating PHSR research agendas
  • Making “the business case” for seeking funding for PHSR
  • Developing strategies for creating national public health practice research agenda

The Council on Linkages believes that studying the public health infrastructure can help public health systems make informed policy decisions to better protect and improve the public's health.
