Advancing the public health workforce to achieve organizational excellence
Resources: Competencies for Performance Improvement Professionals
Resources for Competency 6:
Uses evaluation results and the performance management system to improve individual, program, and organizational performance.

  • Performance Management Toolkit: This Public Health Foundation (PHF) resource provides information in two areas: approaches to performance management and performance management system framework components and resources. Components of visible leadership, performance standards, performance measurement, reporting progress, and quality improvement (QI) are discussed in detail.
  • Performance Management Self-Assessment: This assessment, originally part of the Turning Point Initiative, was updated in 2012 as part of the Public Health Performance Management System Framework. It can be used to identify both strengths and areas for improvement in their performance management systems. Included in the tool are background information, instructions, additional resources, and key term definitions.
  • Performance Management PDCA Self-Assessment Tool: This resource from PHF provides Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) self-assessment tools for both state and local public health agencies. These tools are based on a model for performance management that follows a QI cycle where outcome data loop back into the system for future decision-making.
  • Public Health Quality Improvement Handbook: A collaboration of the American Society for Quality and PHF, this book contains practical examples and tools from subject matter experts successfully using QI to meet client needs, maximize outcomes, and partner with communities.

Developed from the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals and the Core Competencies for Performance Improvement Managers, the Competencies for Performance Improvement Professionals in Public Health are a set of skills desirable for performance improvement (PI) professionals working in public health. As part of the process of developing these competencies, a set of resources and tools related to a draft version of the competencies was collected to help support the development of skills and knowledge for PI professionals. Please note: These resources and tools were gathered based on a draft of the PI Competencies. Although this list of competencies does not reflect the complete set of PI Competencies, the resources and tools available can offer a starting point for exploring resources in this area.
