How to Focus Your Training and Professional Development Efforts to Improve the Skills of Your Public Health Organization: White Paper

Overview

This white paper reports on a series of workshops on focusing limited training and professional development resources to build competence within the public health workforce. Using a quality improvement tool, the prioritization matrix, workshop participants determined the relative importance of the various domains of competencies within the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals (Core Competencies) to improving skill levels in their public health organizations. Workshops were conducted at the 2011 annual meetings of the National Association of County and City Health Officials, the National Association of Local Boards of Health, and the American Public Health Association, with participants representing state and local health departments, local boards of health, academic institutions, and not-for-profit organizations. The paper describes the Core Competencies and the prioritization matrix, and results of the competency domain rankings by the various groups are included.
