Overview

The Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals (Core Competencies) are a consensus set of foundational skills for the broad practice of public health, as defined by the 10 Essential Public Health Services (Essential Services). To ensure that the Core Competencies help build the skills necessary for the delivery of these services, the Core Competencies were mapped with the Essential Services.

This crosswalk of the 2010 version of the Core Competencies and the Essential Services illustrates the relationships between the individual competencies within the Core Competencies and the Essential Services. It is divided into three sections – one for each of the three tiers comprising the Core Competencies – and can be used by public health professionals and organizations to determine which competencies support each of these services.

This crosswalk is based on the version of the Core Competencies adopted by the Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice in May 2010. A revised version of the Core Competencies was released in June 2014. A crosswalk of the 2014 version of the Core Competencies and the Essential Services is also available.
