Understanding the ACIP and How Vaccine Recommendations are Made in the US

Related Categories: Workforce Development

Overview

The Public Health Foundation (PHF), in partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), has developed an educational video, Understanding the ACIP and How Vaccine Recommendations are Made in the US, to help inform viewers about the process, science, and safety behind vaccine recommendations. In the United States, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) develops clinical recommendations on the use of vaccines for children and adults to prevent and control the spread of vaccine-preventable diseases.

This educational video equips clinicians with the information necessary to confidently incorporate approved ACIP recommendations as standards of care in their clinical practice. As trusted sources of health information, healthcare and public health professionals are well-positioned to have conversations with patients and families about vaccination. These discussions can build understanding and confidence amongst patients while combatting miscommunications around vaccine effectiveness and safety.

Upon watching the video, viewers will be able to:

  • Describe the purpose of the ACIP
  • Explain the ACIP's role in developing CDC vaccine recommendations
  • Discuss the process of the ACIP vaccine recommendation development and approval
  • Locate the most up-to-date ACIP recommendations and immunization schedules
Help us share this resource by utilizing the ACIP Video Promotional Toolkit, which includes key messages, pre-drafted social media content, and adaptable images to positively contribute to vaccine-handling confidence among immunization workforce staff.
