PHIT 2017 Logo.pngBuilding on more than a decade of collaborative work with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and national public health partner organizations, the 2017 Public Health Improvement Training (PHIT) offers networking opportunities alongside interactive learning and skill-building sessions, with topics including quality improvement, performance management, national voluntary accreditation, health assessment, and improvement planning. Annually, PHIT features hands-on sessions and discussion groups that renew commitment to performance excellence and inspire new insight long after the convening ends. PHIT 2017 is taking place June 13-14 in Albuquerque, NM.

At PHIT, you will learn from practitioners, professional trainers, and national partners, participate in small workshops, gain insight into the relationships between various public health improvement initiatives and tools, including accreditation and state/community health improvement planning frameworks, and hear and share valuable tips. This networking event is for performance improvement professionals and those interested in the improvement of public health agencies, systems and community health.

Public Health Foundation (PHF) experts will lead the following sessions at PHIT 2017:
An Action-oriented Introduction to Performance Management
June 13, 2017, 11:15 AM
If you’re just beginning to lead performance management at your agency, this workshop, led by PHF expert Sonja Armbruster, is for you. Participants will leave this session with a concrete action plan for making progress on performance management. First this session will create conditions for participants to discover foundational explanations of performance management committees, performance management assessments, and the four quadrants of the performance management system. This workshop will include interactive exercises for participants to apply what they’ve learned and develop their own next steps. This session will place a special emphasis on performance measure selection/development and reporting of progress.

Actionable CHIP: How to Get the CHIP Off the Shelf and Into Practice
June 14, 2017, 9:30 AM
Participants in this workshop will learn how to apply three quality improvement tools to help make their Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP) a community health improvement practice – not just a plan. This interactive workshop led by PHF experts Jack Moran and Sonja Armbruster, will explore why health departments have problems getting the CHIP into practice. A Force Field will be used to help participants better understand the driving and restraining forces that contribute to implementation of the CHIP not getting off the ground. Participants will then use a Cause and Effect Diagram to understand the internal and external root causes that contribute to CHIP inaction. Then participants will use a Solution and Effect Diagram to determine how to move the CHIP from a plan to a dynamic tool for action to improve community health. Finally, a small group discussion will be held on what it will take for the community to understand, engage with, and utilize the CHIP to improve their community’s health.

The Right Stuff: Aligning Job Descriptions with Workforce Competencies
June 14, 2017, 3:45 PM
Important to successful workforce development is ensuring job descriptions reflect the competencies most important for being effective in that role. The Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals (Core Competencies), a consensus set of skills desirable for the broad practice of public health, are widely used by state and local health departments. During this interactive session, PHF experts Sonja Armbruster and Kathleen Amos will guide participants in small work groups to: 1) identify specific Core Competencies relevant to public health job descriptions; 2) prioritize Core Competencies that may be most needed in the short-term to address agency needs and requirements; and 3) learn more about a new tool to help put this process into practice in their own agencies. Following this group work, Denver Public Health will share how they have used such a process to identify essential Core Competencies for positions within their organization and built upon this work to strengthen important skills within their workforce. Opportunities for obtaining training in the priority competency areas will be discussed, and resources for incorporating the Core Competencies into workforce development efforts will be shared.
