Today, five new public health resources are available through the Public Health Foundation’s (PHF) Learning Resource Center (LRC).  After recently forming a partnership with the American Public Health Association (APHA), LRC now carries the following APHA-authored texts, which address violence, prevention, disability, and obesity:

Youth Violence: Interventions for Health Care Providers
This text aims to advance the field of youth violence prevention by identifying the opportunities, benefits, and challenges of addressing this issue.  It focuses on emergency-based programs, including the challenges associated with their development, and describes program-models that can be replicated or adapted by health care professionals to effectively address youth violence in your community.

Confronting Violence: Answering Questions About the Epidemic Destroying America’s Homes and Communities, 3rd Edition
This resource provides a comprehensive look into the many forms that violence can take.  It begins by explaining societal determinants of violence, specifically addressing the question of whether America is exceptionally violent.  Each chapter addresses one type of violence, from physical and emotional abuse of children, to murder, homicide, and suicide.  The text concludes by examining the future of violence prevention.

Prevention is Primary: Strategies for Community Well-Being, 2nd Edition
The updated edition explains the transition from prevention theory to implementation and collaboration through evaluation.  It identifies models, methods, and approaches for building health and equity in communities, and outlines effective ways to do so in the current economic and health care climate.  Focusing on prevention, it illustrates practical social and health interventions and addresses other ways to prevent the health challenges facing at-risk groups.

Disability and Public Health
Disability is examined in a public health framework in this book, which begins by providing a history of disability and public health, and moves on to consider the impact of cultural and governmental factors in the epidemiology of disability.  It also focuses on the social determinants of disability and the tools necessary to develop systems of health promotion for the disabled, including health education, health literacy, and organizational services.

Preventing Childhood Obesity in Early Care and Education Programs
This joint publication from APHA, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the National Resource Center for Health and Safety in Child Care and Early Education is the new set of national standards for nutrition, physical activity, and screen time for early care and education programs.  These standards aim to prevent excessive weight gain in children and reverse the obesity trend among this population.  They support key national campaigns for early development of healthy lifestyle habits.
