For the first time, the Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice (Council on Linkages) will be holding a town hall-style meeting to discuss and collect feedback on the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals (Core Competencies) from the public health community. The meeting will take place as a session within the 141st American Public Health Association Annual Meeting & Exposition, November 2-6, 2013 in Boston, MA. Once again, the Public Health Foundation (PHF) will participate in this annual event with many different offerings to inform and hear from public health professionals about performance management, quality improvement, and workforce development in public health settings.

Highlighting a full slate of sessions, PHF will conduct a town hall-style meeting to enable public health professionals to share their thoughts and experiences related to the Core Competencies and influence the review and revision processes. Hearing directly from those working within public health about the benefits of the Core Competencies, ways in which they are being used, their utility in preparing for accreditation, barriers and challenges to use, and suggestions for areas of improvement, among other topics, will help ensure the Core Competencies continue to support and enhance organizational performance and shape the future of the public health workforce. This session will take place on November 5, 2013 from 8:30 to 10:00 AM in the Webster room of Boston’s Westin Waterfront Hotel.

PHF will be presenting at a total of six sessions at this year’s event, including a practical workshop on developing workforce development plans and “Helping the Public Health Workforce Do More with Less” by using TRAIN, the nation’s premier learning management network for professionals who protect the public’s health. All APHA Annual Meeting attendees are welcome to attend these sessions and meet the experts from PHF who will be available to answer questions.

In the APHA Public Health Expo, PHF will be located at booth 529 to provide attendees with resources and tools to assist with initiatives in performance management, quality improvement, workforce development, and national public health accreditation. New this year, PHF will offer case studies of example practices in public health and healthcare collaboration from the Independence Health Department (Independence, Missouri) and others. Also at the exhibit booth, copies of the current Core Competencies will be available for attendees to use and provide feedback to the Council on Linkages as it reviews the set of skills for revision. There will also be information on how to join the TRAIN network and free customized TRAIN luggage tags will be made on-site for a unique take-home souvenir. Finally, PHF will hold a raffle to win three complimentary copies of the Public Health Quality Improvement Encyclopedia at the exhibit booth. Just leave a business card or contact information to enter.

Connect with PHF before, during, or after the event by leaving a comment below, following PHF on Twitter, or posting a message to the PHF Facebook page to start or continue a discussion with other public health professionals and organizations.
