Join the Public Health Foundation (PHF) this November in Chicago at the 2015 American Public Health Association Annual Meeting for an interactive discussion of national workforce development efforts that are guiding the future of public health. Featuring a panel of national experts, Navigating the Seas of Public Health Workforce Development: What Every Practitioner and Academic Needs to Know will explore new initiatives within public health workforce development and their connections to a long-standing workforce development initiative of the Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice (Council on Linkages), the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals (Core Competencies).

Numerous initiatives play a role in workforce development within the field of public health. In addition to the Core Competencies, which were most recently revised in 2014 and describe foundational skills for the broad practice of public health, newer initiatives are also influencing the path of the public health workforce into the future. The Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health’s (ASPPH’s) Framing the Future initiative is developing a vision for public health education in the 21st century, the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) is revising the accreditation criteria for graduate-level education in public health, and the de Beaumont Foundation’s National Consortium for Public Health Workforce Development  is identifying cross-cutting workforce development skills. How do all of these efforts relate? Connect with leaders at the APHA Annual Meeting to learn how the initiatives are aligning and contributing to developing an even stronger public health workforce.

This 90-minute session will be held on Monday, November 2, 2015, beginning at 8:30am in Room W175a of the McCormick Place Convention Center and will be moderated by Council on Linkages Chair C. William Keck, MD, MPH. Panelists will include Donna J. Petersen, ScD, MHS, CPH, Chair, ASPPH Framing the Future Task Force; Laura Rasar King, MPH, MCHES, Executive Director, CEPH; and Edward L. Hunter, MA, President and Chief Executive Officer, de Beaumont Foundation.

Ample time will be provided during the session for a discussion with the presenters, and it’s never too early to share your question or suggestion! Leave your questions or discussion ideas in the Comments section below, email them to me at kamos@phf.org, or send PHF a message on Facebook or Twitter. Whether you will be participating in the APHA Annual Meeting session or catching up afterward, your comments are welcome. Join in the discussion in person on November 2nd or check back here following the meeting for a new blog post capturing the highlights. Hope to see you in Chicago!
