Design – Planning for Training
The design of effective training begins with a plan. Developing a training plan that includes desired outcomes, topics, competencies, goals, and objectives for training; tailoring training to the audience and resources available; and creating and implementing a marketing plan can all help set the stage for successful training.
 
Strategies and Methods
  • Develop training plan
    • Determine desired outcomes of training
      • Use results of assessments (see Assess)
    • Link topics/content to desired outcomes
    • Link desired outcomes to competencies
      • Identify appropriate competencies
      • Map competencies to desired outcomes
    • Develop learning goals and observable and measurable objectives
      • Represent the desired outcomes/needs
    • Align training to desired outcomes
    • Align training to organization’s business needs, if appropriate
    • Seek consultation or technical assistance on training plan, if appropriate
  • Tailor training to the audience and resources available
    • Tailor training to identified characteristics of potential learners (see Assess)
    • Incorporate adult learning principles into training
      • Incorporate problem-based learning methods
    • Select appropriate training formats/learning strategies/technologies for learners’ needs
      • Self-directed learning
      • Webinars
      • Mobile delivery
    • Determine appropriate length of training
      • Number of sessions
      • Length of sessions
      • Time commitment required outside of formal training sessions
    • Determine desired numbers and types of individuals to reach
  • Develop marketing plan specific to the training program(s) being designed
  • Implement marketing plan
