Advancing the public health workforce to achieve organizational excellence
Vector Control Population Health Driver Diagram Program

Overview

From 2015-2017, the Public Health Foundation (PHF) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) collaborated on a project to use the Vector Control Population Health Driver Diagram as a framework for engaging community partners to decrease the presence of vectors and prevent vector borne disease transmission. The project benefits the participating vector control programs and other communities that may use this framework to improve their vector control programs.

A population health driver diagram can be used collaboratively by public health, healthcare, and other stakeholders in a community to identify and address potential primary and secondary drivers to achieve an identified health objective. Using the Vector Control Population Health Driver Diagram, PHF assisted five local health departments (HDs) convene community stakeholders to identify, align, and implement interventions for improving the effectiveness and efficiency of their vector control programs. These sites were:

Each health department worked with the HDs to establish partnerships and identify and implement potential interventions and strategies, including:

  • Public messaging and education
  • Building partnerships with camps
  • Promoting vector control policy
  • Creating elementary school curricula
  • Developing a referral mechanism
  • Altering and eliminating environments conducive to pest population

Lessons learned from the HDs and PHF from this project were published in the Journal of Environmental Health column, "Tools to Drive Quality Improvement of Vector Control Services." PHF also developed a intervention guidance document to assist other HDs in improving vector control programs and services. These resources provide further information on vector control program improvement and may be helpful in preparation, response, and control for the Zika Virus.
