Each year, 1 out of 6 Americans get sick from foodborne diseases such as E. coli 0157:H7 and Salmonella. As a result, tens of millions of people are affected and thousands die in the United States overall each year from foodborne diseases. They also cause billions of dollars in healthcare-related and industry costs annually.
Unfortunately, almost any type of food can spread the illness. With high importance for prevention of these outbreaks, CDC has identified reducing foodborne diseases as a Winnable Battle. Promoting evidence-based programs and cost-effective strategies as prevention tactics will both have significant impacts on the nation's health considering this current issue.
Public Health Foundation (PHF) offers resources that public health and other professionals can use to help reduce the rates of foodborne diseases in the U.S. To learn more information about the prevention of foodborne illnesses, take courses on TRAIN such as Action of Surveillance Principles for Food Safety, Epi-Ready: Foodborne Illness Response Strategies, and Environmental Health Online: Food Safety.
