At its meeting on September 17, 2013, the Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice (Council on Linkages) voted to begin revising the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals (Core Competencies). The Council on Linkages began collecting feedback on the Core Competencies from the public health community earlier this year and has received a variety of suggestions, including keeping the eight domains, simplifying the language of some individual competencies, and adding more examples of what is meant by each competency. Based on this initial feedback, the Council on Linkages decided to proceed with minor revisions to the Core Competencies while continuing to collect input from public health professionals, governing bodies, volunteers, students, and others. This input will influence the Council on Linkages’ decisions regarding the nature and degree of changes to the Core Competencies. Feedback on the Core Competencies is being accepted through the end of December 2013.

Offer Feedback In-Person at the APHA Annual Meeting
Public health professionals will have an opportunity to provide feedback on the Core Competencies in-person at next month’s American Public Health Association (APHA) Annual Meeting in Boston, MA. Join the Council on Linkages on Tuesday, November 5, 2013, from 8:30–10:00 am for a town hall meeting on the Core Competencies in the Webster Room of the Westin Boston Waterfront Hotel. This gathering is a chance to engage with other public health professionals to discuss the benefits of the Core Competencies, ways in which they are being used, barriers to their use, their value in preparing for accreditation, and suggestions for areas of improvement, among other topics. Further opportunities to provide feedback on the Core Competencies and to become involved in work related to these competencies will also be discussed during the session. In addition to this town hall meeting, feedback can be submitted by visiting the Public Health Foundation’s (PHF) booth (#529) in the APHA Public Health Expo from November 3-6, 2013.
